Previewing the 2012 XC Season Ten Runners at a Time

10 Charde Barnes VIDEO INTERVIEW Bowie 12 Results 2011-12 Barnes is another racer who does not shy away from competition. Fifth at xc states shows she does not back down from the best runners in the state and heads to Virginia to find more comopetition. She enjoys the 1600 and 800 more than the 3200 especially since she does not have much competition in the 3200 in her county.
9 Abbey Daley VIDEO INTERVIEW Clarksburg 12 Results 2011-12 Nobody runs as many races during the year as Abbey Daley. Running less will help her peak at seasons end and keep her away from the injury bug. Seventh as states in xc and fourth at MoCo champs shows she can do the work.  A number of 5:16 1600's could drop this spring.
8 Erin Causey VIDEO INTERVIEW Hereford 11 Results 2011-12 Erin won states as a freshman and finished fifth last season.  She says she has learned a lot from her sophomore season and she will need to put that into practice if she wants to get back to the top this year. She improved on her outdoor track times this last season and to keep their lofty status as a team will need to run shoulder to shoulder with her teammate Carter.
7 Isabel Griffith VIDEO INTERVIEW Dulaney 11 Results 2011-12 Isabel has the advantage of having the Hereford girls in her conference. This gives her the ability to test different race strategies and run against some of the best girls in the state a couple of times a year.  One of the guttiest runners around, she uses her brains as much as her talent to get her to the front. She did not finish lower than fifth in any xc race last season with a third at states.
6 Sara Carter VIDEO INTERVIEW Hereford 11 Results 2011-12 Sara made huge strides from her freshman to sophomore year taking over the number one spot on a deep team. Second at states, but improved every meet from day one.  Her 5:11 and 11:15 were expected, but her best event is probably the 800. If her improvement continues she could run with Gonzalez at the end of the year.
5 Julia Nardone VIDEO INTERVIEW Glenelg 10 Results 2011-12 Nardone improved rapidly in cross country as a freshman winning at Bulldog and taking fifth at states. In the middle of outdoor track she challenged Ashley Hayes of Severna Park running a 5:07 1600, but tired at the end of the season. She still was able to run a 11:17 at states.  With some rest and a summer of running she should come back to run even better this year.
4 Hannah Mansbach VIDEO INTERVIEW Glenelg Country 12 Results 2011-12 Hannah's 11:06 3200 at the late spring Milestat.com Invitational is only a sign of what is to come for the senior.  She put in the miles this summer to boost her track exploits and has the competition in the IAAM meets to help her improve.  If she can go early with Gonzalez, she could have a chance of surprising her at the end of the race.
3 Emily Mulhern VIDEO INTERVIEW Urbana 10 Results 2011-12 Mulhern had a successful running career with the Frederick Lightning youth running club before entering high school and then dominated her competition winning the competitive 3A states easily. She only ran one race in indoor and outdoor seasons, so a lack of running competition could hurt her chances of maintaining her dominance this season.
2 Lucy Srour VIDEO INTERVIEW Winston Churchill 10 Results 2011-12 Last year's freshman phenom won the MoCo Championships and took 2nd in states in XC, coming out of nowhere to win the novice races at Bull Run and Great American. Was strong when it counted in track, but legs tired toward the end of the year.  Gutted out a 5:10 2nd place at states. A strong summer of easy distance will prepare her for her sophomore sojourn.
1 Ellie Gonzalez VIDEO INTERVIEW The Catholic High School 11 Results 2011-12 Ellie is hands down our number one choice this year.  A hard worker who doesn't shy away from a brutal workout, Gonzalez broke 10:40 last year running on her own. As she does in most races, Gonzalez has had to learn how to pace herself until she begins to lap runners. Last season she lost to Hannah Oneda early, but never lost until she hit the national championship races. She will have to seek out better competition for her to improve quickly.
