Bethesda Takes Team Titles - Clarksburg Takes Invidivdual Titles

Feeling fast and fit on their home course, two Clarksburg athletes made their presence known at Thursday afternoon's Coyote Invitational.

Will Bertrand, ever-confident after his victory at the Bull Run Large School Race, took it to the field again at High Point farm yesterday evening. Dueling with David Fitzgerald of Winston Churchill for the first mile and half, Bertrand eventually broke away and opened up a comfortable margin. He finished in an impressive time of 15:37, 17 seconds ahead of Fitzgerald.

Every point mattered for Bethesda-CC who finished a mere one point ahead of Quince Orchard to claim the team title--74 points to QO's 75.

Conspicuously absent from this race was Patrick DuBoyce. Though Linganore was at the meet, DuBoyce could have been found tempo-ing the course as part of his preparations for the Manhattan Invitational next weekend in the Bronx.

The dynamic of the girls' race was very similar. Lucy Srour of Churchill took the early lead, with Abbey Daley of Clarksburg following close behind. After exiting the back loop of the course at a mile and a half, Daley pulled up even with Srour.

"I didn't want to take the lead too early, " said Daley. "I was hoping to save my energy for a surge at the end."

And surge she did. Entering into the final half-mile of the race, Daley had opened up a few seconds on Srour. The Clarksburg senior won the race in a time of 18:29, six seconds ahead of Srour, the sophomore.

Showing unrivaled depth, Bethesda placed five runners in the overall top 12, tallying 35 points. Winston Churchill finished second with 57 points.
