Westminster Sweeps Team Titles Despite Heavy Pre-Race Rain
The Crossfire Invitational is always a popular Monday race for teams, but this year a few snags kept the participation level down to ten teams.
"Our usual date is two weeks earlier and that hurt us", said Liberty coach Dan Jones, "and this rain kept some more people at home."
As typical for the Crossfire Invite, the skies opened up in the hours leading up to the race and some teams decided just to keep the buses in the parking lot. With the MVAL championships on Friday some teams also decided to just race their "B" teams yesterday.
Alex Love of Chesapeake won the boys race with little competition despite running at the Bulldog Invitational on Saturday. Love began the race in a pack of four, but quickly pulled away from Doug Pickett of South Carroll to win in a relaxed 17:27. Westminster took the team title over South Carroll by one point 58-59.
In the girls race, Natalie Eastwood of Westminster came in the favorite and the only question was could she get a big enough lead over Sarah Rinehart of Liberty to negate Rinehart's deadly kick.
Rinehart did not leave it to the last 200 meters, taking the lead from Eastwood shortly after the 2.5 mile mark and went on to an easy win in 20:46. Westminster made it a clean sweep by taking home the girls crown.
