Repeat champions was the theme at this year's IAAM Cross Country Championships. After Ellie Gonzalez's eye-opening run of 17:59 at last year's championship race--a course record--very few expected her to be challenged at this year's race.
Amid windy and chilly conditions, the Catholic High junior delivered another impressive performance this year. Completing the hilly, Oregon Ridge course in 18:19, Gonzalez secured a comfortable win. Incidentally, her 18:19 was the second-fastest time ever recorded among IAAM athletes on the course.
Hannah Mansbach of Glenelg Country School sneaked under the 19-minute barrier as well, clocking 18:59.
Proving that depth is the name of the game in cross country, Archbishop Spalding defended their IAAM crown, scoring 52 points. Led by Elizabeth Voigt and Alexandra Kamm, the Cavaliers placed all of their scoring runners in the top 15 (from the perspective of team scoring). A talented Mt. De Sales squad placed second with 94 points.
