COMPLETE RESULTS

Rolling hills, manicured grass, cool temperatures and low humidity greeted the nearly 600 athletes who participated in the Inaugural Horsin' Around 5K and 3K Fun Run yesterday at Shawan Downs in Baltimore County.

The event presented by the IAAM was the first cross country race at the Shawan Downs equestrian center. The route was a one and a half loop circuit around the race track and surrounding fields of the facility. The course had been freshly mowed the day before and the finish line was at the finish of the steeplechase course in front of the reviewing stand.

Many of the private schools in the area brought out their entire cross country squads to use the meet as a warmup for the season.  In addition, the schools other sports teams participated in either the 5K or the one loop 3K event.  McDaniel college also brought their squads to test out the first time race course as well as many local road runners from the area.

The 5K event started with a warm up by Lynne Brick of Brick Bodies Fitness followed by the firing of the gun by Mt. de Sales Athletic Director Gene Williams.  Three athletes took off at break neck speed pumping their fists in the air, but by the end of the first 60 meters, they had pulled up into a walk as the real runners quickly passed them by.

Paul Hannsen took a 30 meter lead over Ben Pickett, CJ Naper, Jake Zamostny, Mike Monaghan and Cody Crutchley, but by the time the group had rounded turn two of the race track, Pickett and Zamostny had passed Hanssen and had picked up the pace.  Pickett took a slight lead over Zamostny, but with less than a mile to go, the McDaniel and former South Carroll runner had taken over the lead for good.

At the finish Zamsostny won in a time of 17:30 as Pickett was the only other runner to run under 18:00 with a 17:57. Naper was third in 18:00 with Hannsen holding for for fourth in 18:12.

The course may look flat at first glance, but is deceptively difficult when viewing. The long 200 meter hill to the finish line takes runners by surprise in both the length of the hill as well as the grade in the middle of the hill.  On the fields there are also a number of gradual inclines that cannot be taken for granted.

The ladies race had looked to be the initial meeting of the year between Madeline Dulac of McDonogh and Elizabeth Tauber of John Carroll, but Dulac did not make it to the starting line so Tauber had the race to herself.

Running behind two men during the race, Tauber ran to an excellent time 19:19 on the course finishing 11th overall. Lindsay Wilson of McDaniel and ex-Seton Keough runner finished second at 20:07 and just ahead of Kelly Gruber,27, at 20:15.

Next year, the IAAM will be opening the race up with more sponsors, better prizes and hoping to attract a much larger crowd to what will certainly be an annual event.

Food for Thought:

While Hereford has tradition as the state championship course, Shawan Downs might be a good alternative if the state would consider looking for a course that might provide a more viewer friendly course that offers many amenities.

The course at Shawan Downs can easily be adapted to be a one loop race that can be contained within the fences of the race track and attached fields or which could easily add one challenging hill in the middle of the race.  The entire race can be viewed from seating on the hillsides or along the fences.  There will never be the issue of spectators rushing to the finish line or interfering with the athletes during the race.  The finish line is at the top of a hill and can easily be seen by every specator regardless of where they are sitting.

There is plenty of parking for cars and busses can drop off the athletes and park at Oregon Ridge which is less than a mile away until the end of the race.  There are acres of fields than can accomodate team tents, electricity at the finish line and in the spectator area.  There is a tower that can be used for announcing during the race and for awards presentations.  There are indoor facilities for refreshments and to provide shelter in the event of rain.

The course can be mowed, raked and rolled for an excellant running surface and the course can easily be measured to an exact 5000 meters.
